Commissioner Putnam Highlights Services Available to Veterans and Military Members

Posted on November 9, 2017

Ahead of Veterans Day, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam is highlighting the services that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides to Florida’s more than 1.6 million veterans, as well as some services for active military members. The department works to support our nation’s heroes and their families through services, such as: waiving fees for professional licenses, expediting concealed weapon license applications and providing unique outdoor opportunities to wounded veterans.
“The men and women who selflessly serve our country and defend our liberty deserve all of the support we can give them,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam.
The department provides enhanced services to veterans and active members of the military by:

  • Waiving the fees for honorably discharged veterans and their spouses to enter new professions or open a business that is licensed by the department so that these men and women can jumpstart their careers.
  • Expediting nearly 90,000 applications for concealed weapon licenses for veterans and active duty military since the summer of 2015. Honorably discharged veterans should submit a copy of their DD 214 long form with their applications. More information on how honorably discharged veterans can apply for a concealed weapons license can be found here.
  • Hosting wounded veterans at outdoor recreational events free of charge through Operation Outdoor Freedom. More than 3,000 wounded veterans have participated in more than 400 guided hunts, fishing trips, canoe trips and more in Florida’s state forests and designated outdoor spaces. Additional information about the program and upcoming events can be found here.
  • Dedicating two of Florida’s state forests in honor of our veterans – Peace River State Forest and Prairie Tract State Forest – and reducing forest entrance and camping rates for veterans to enjoy these great places.
  • Accepting relevant military training or education when veterans or active military members apply for private investigator and security officer licenses.

Commissioner Adam Putnam Expands Concealed Weapon License Partnership to Osceola County Tax Collector

Posted on November 8, 2017

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam today announced that residents in and around Osceola County can now visit the Osceola County Tax Collector’s Office to apply for or renew their concealed weapon licenses. Osceola County Tax Collector Bruce Vickers is the 51st tax collector to partner with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services since Commissioner Putnam implemented this first-of-its-kind partnership in 2014.
“By expanding our partnership with county tax collectors, we’re able to provide a more convenient way for citizens to apply for or renew their concealed weapon licenses,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam. “I thank Osceola County Tax Collector Bruce Vickers for his hard work to offer the most efficient process possible to Floridians seeking a concealed weapon license.”
The partnership allows tax collectors to receive applications, take fingerprints and photographs and send the information to the department to process the request for a concealed weapon license. Tax collector offices also offer on-site, same-day printing of renewal licenses for eligible Floridians.
The 51 tax collectors participating in both the application and renewal process for concealed weapon licenses include the following counties: Alachua, Baker, Bay, Bradford, Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, Columbia, Dixie, Escambia, Flagler, Franklin, Gulf, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Holmes, Indian River, Jackson, Lafayette, Lake, Lee, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Nassau, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Osceola, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Santa Rosa, Seminole, St. Johns, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Walton, Wakulla and Washington.
Consumers can still apply for or renew a concealed weapon license via mail or at one of the department’s eight regional offices in the following locations: Doral, Fort Walton, Jacksonville, North Port, Orlando, Tallahassee, Tampa and West Palm Beach. Consumers can also renew their licenses online. Concealed weapon licenses are valid for seven years.
To further enhance convenience, Commissioner Putnam announced in June that the fee to apply for or renew a concealed weapon license was lowered for the third time. Additionally, the department expedites concealed weapon license applications for all active military members and veterans. To date, nearly 90,000 active military members and veterans have received expedited concealed weapon licenses.

Commissioner Putnam Announces Winners of Agricultural-Environmental Leadership Award

Posted on November 1, 2017

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam today announced the recipients of the Commissioner’s Agricultural-Environmental Leadership Award, which recognizes the environmentally innovative farming techniques of Florida’s farmers and ranchers. This year’s recipients are: Brad and Meghan Austin and Dale and Cindy Eade of Cindale Farms in Marianna; Greg Davis of Speedling Incorporated in Ruskin; and Brittany Lee of Florida Blue Farms, INC., in Waldo.
“These award recipients use innovative technology and methods to protect Florida’s environment and natural resources while contributing to Florida’s $120 billion agriculture industry,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam.
Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture has presented this award annually since 1994 to Florida’s growers and ranchers committed to preserving Florida’s resources while providing agriculture products.
Brad and Meghan Austin co-own and manage Cindale Farms in Marianna with Meghan’s parents, Dale and Cindy Eade. Dale and Cindy founded the small dairy farm and now manage the family’s ice cream business, Southern Craft Creamery, which uses milk products produced by their own cows. Cindale Farms prioritizes conservation and was one of the first farms to enroll in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Dairy Best Management Practices. They have participated in nutrient management programs, such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, to implement a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan, rainwater and storage plan, erosion control and prescribed grazing management. They also partnered with the Natural Resources Conservation Service to develop a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan that forms a baseline for fertilizer use.
Speedling, Incorporated was established in 1968 in Sun City, home of the Speedling corporate office, original nursery and EPS manufacturing facility. The company has eight nurseries throughout the country and two in Florida, where moisture levels are carefully analyzed to improve performance and consistency of transplant operations. The Sun City nursery boasts over 800,000 square feet of greenhouse space equipped with overhead water trolleys that utilize the one-to-five moisture scale to reduce water usage and prevent run-off by only irrigating the exact moisture level needed. At their second location, Speedling circulates 4 million gallons of water throughout the 700,000-square foot growing space with a sub-irrigation circulation system, which uses 80 percent less than overhead and waters the plant without wetting the foliage. Speedling uses their overhead irrigation system and sub-irrigation system to recycle water into tanks for future use.
In 2009, Brittany Lee began working with her parents to convert their 50 acres of Silverculure land in Waldo into a Southern Highbush blueberry farm. Lee is Vice President and General Manager of Florida Blue Farms, which now consists of 90 acres of production. Florida Blue Farms implements the department’s Specialty Fruit and Nut Crop BMPs to incorporate weather stations for accurate on-site weather conditions; drip irrigation and ground cover to reduce irrigation needs and inputs; soil moisture monitoring; and plant tissue and root growth monitoring and testing to assess herbicide application. The farm’s drainage system collects water into a two-acre tailwater recovery pond for future use during freeze events. Florida Blue minimizes impact on waterways by using filter strips and EnviroGrid Geocell Systems throughout the farm and fertigation systems to apply spoon-fed nutrients directly to the root zone.
The winners were recognized today during the Commissioner’s Ag-Environmental Leadership Breakfast at the Florida Farm Bureau’s Convention. Read about the award and past winners here.

With the addition of the Franklin County Tax Collector’s Office, Florida residents can now apply for or renew concealed weapon licenses at 57 tax collector office locations in 50 counties.
“We’re dedicated to making our concealed weapon license application and renewal process as convenient as possible for law-abiding citizens,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam. “By partnering with county tax collectors, we’re increasing efficiency while enhancing customer service.”
In 2014, Commissioner Putnam implemented this first-of-its-kind partnership, which allows tax collectors to receive applications, take fingerprints and photographs and send the information to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to process the request for a concealed weapon license. There are currently more than 1.8 million concealed weapon licenses.
The 50 tax collectors participating in both the application and renewal process for concealed weapon licenses include the following counties: Alachua, Baker, Bay, Bradford, Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, Columbia, Dixie, Escambia, Flagler, Franklin, Gulf, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Holmes, Indian River, Jackson, Lafayette, Lake, Lee, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Nassau, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Santa Rosa, Seminole, St. Johns, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Walton, Wakulla and Washington.

Commissioner Adam Putnam’s Statement Regarding Current Federal Disaster Relief Legislation

Posted on October 24, 2017

The U.S. Senate last night voted to move forward the $36.5 billion disaster relief legislation without additional support for Florida agriculture. Florida’s agriculture industry suffered a more than $2.5 billion hit due to Hurricane Irma. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam’s statement is below:
“I’m disappointed that the current disaster relief legislation does not include much-needed support for Florida’s agriculture industry, despite strong and unified support by Florida’s congressional delegation. Governor Scott and I were recently in D.C. to advocate on behalf of Florida’s agriculture industry, which is in dire straits.
“While I’m disappointed in the lack of support for Florida agriculture in this current legislation, I’m hopeful that the commitment to an additional emergency funding measure next month comes to fruition, so Florida agriculture can recover.”

Commissioner Putnam Recognizes Florida’s 17 Million Acres of Forests During Working Forests Week

Posted on October 16, 2017

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam and the Florida Forest Service are celebrating the benefits of Florida’s more than 17 million acres of forests during Florida’s third annual Working Forests Week, which is Oct. 15 through Oct. 21.
A working forest includes publicly or privately owned lands where sustainable production of timber is balanced with promoting healthy populations of native forest plants and animals. Some familiar products that come from working forests include: paper, lumber, cosmetics, medicines and fabrics.
“Florida’s forests provide the resources to make more than 5,000 types of products,” said State Forester Jim Karels. “Each year, more than 70 million trees are planted to help sustain Florida’s working forests.”
Florida’s Working Forests Week was developed in partnership with the Florida Forestry Association and is held each year alongside National Forest Products Week. Working Forest Week workshops and events can be found on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ events calendar.
The Florida Forest Service, a division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, manages more than 1 million acres of state forests and provides forest management assistance on more than 17 million acres of private and community forests. The Florida Forest Service is also responsible for protecting homes, forestland and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfire on more than 26 million acres.
