Gov. Scott: Florida Doubles Job Creation Promise with 1.4 Million New Jobs

Posted on August 18, 2017

Unemployment Rate Remains at Ten-Year Low

Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida businesses have created 1,422,700 private sector jobs since Governor Scott has been in office, doubling his 2010 promise to create 700,000 jobs in seven years. More than 26,000 private-sector jobs were created in July and the unemployment rate remained at the lowest rate in a decade, 4.1 percent. Governor Scott made the announcement at Morgan Auto Group, a Florida-based dealership with more than 23 locations across the state. Morgan Auto Group currently employs 2,000 Floridians, including more than 185 employees at their Brandon Honda location in Tampa. Governor Scott also highlighted his proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that will require a supermajority vote by future Florida legislatures to raise any taxes or fees.
Governor Scott said, “Over the past six and a half years, we have worked relentlessly to cut taxes, reduce burdensome regulations and completely turn around Florida’s economy. Our goal was to create 700,000 jobs in seven years and while we were proud to reach that ambitious goal three years early, we did not slow down. I am proud to announce today that after cutting taxes more than 75 times, Florida businesses have created more than 1.4 million new jobs, officially doubling our promise to create 700,000 jobs in seven years.
“While our efforts to cut taxes have helped save Floridians and job creators more than $7 billion, we must make sure our progress is not undone. That is why, during the upcoming legislative session, I will fight to give voters the opportunity to amend the Florida Constitution to require a supermajority vote by future state legislatures to raise any taxes or fees. Together, we can make sure future generations are not burdened with unfair taxes and that our state remains a national leader in job creation and opportunity.”
For the 64th consecutive month, Florida’s annual job growth rate of 2.9 percent is exceeding the nation’s rate of 1.7 percent. As of July, Florida’s unemployment rate had dropped 6.6 percentage points since December 2010, while the national rate declined by only 5 percentage points in the same time period. In the last year, 296,000 people entered Florida’s labor force, a growth of 3 percent, almost four times the national labor force growth rate of only 0.8 percent.
Cissy Proctor, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, said, “Florida’s unemployment rate has been consistently low. I am proud that in the last year, so many Floridians have achieved financial stability through new job opportunities. This shows that the Sunshine State’s economy is stronger than ever and Floridians are able to find a good job, start a business or grow their career in this great state.”
Other positive economic indicators include:

  • Private-sector industries gaining the most jobs over-the-year were:
    • Construction with 35,800 new jobs;
    • Education and health services with 35,600 new jobs;
    • Professional and business services with 35,400 new jobs;
    • Leisure and hospitality with 32,900 new jobs; and
    • Trade, transportation and utilities with 30,600 new jobs.
  • Florida job postings showed 240,443 openings in July 2017.
  • In July, Florida’s 24 regional workforce boards reported 23,168 Floridians, including 1,367 veterans, were placed in jobs.

Gov. Scott: Florida Businesses Created Nearly 54,000 Jobs in 2017

Posted on March 24, 2017

Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida businesses created 53,800 private-sector jobs in the first two months of 2017, bringing the total number of new jobs added since December 2010 to 1,346,200. Governor Scott made the announcement at Bealls, Inc. in Bradenton. The retailer, which is headquartered in Florida, has created more than 300 jobs across the state over the past two years and employs more than 8,500 Floridians.

Governor Rick Scott said, “I am proud to announce that Florida’s private-sector businesses have created nearly 54,000 new jobs in 2017. Over the past six years, we have been relentless in our efforts to make Florida the most business-friendly state in the nation because a job is the most important thing to a family. It is incredibly disheartening that politicians in the Florida House have voted to jeopardize programs that create opportunities for our families, visitors, military members and job creators. However, we will continue to fight for important economic development tools like Enterprise Florida and VISIT FLORIDA and the critical impact they have on supporting our growing economy.”

For the 59th consecutive month, Florida’s annual job growth rate of 3.3 percent is exceeding the nation’s rate of 1.8 percent. In the last year, 239,800 new jobs were created by businesses across the state. Florida’s unemployment rate remained low at 5 percent in February, while the labor force participation rate climbed to 59.8 percent. Florida’s labor force is growing at a rate of 3.1 percent over the year while the U.S. labor force is growing at a rate of 0.7 percent over the year.

Cissy Proctor, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, said, “Florida’s labor force is climbing more than four times faster than the nation’s and our labor force participation rate has risen over-the-year for eight consecutive months. This proves that Floridians are confident in their ability to land a good job here in Florida.”

Other positive economic indicators include:

  • Private-sector industries gaining the most jobs over-the-year in February were:
    • Professional and business services with 43,300 new jobs;
    • Trade, transportation and utilities with 42,000 new jobs;
    • Education and health services with 40,500 new jobs;
    • Leisure and hospitality with 40,300 new jobs; and
    • Construction with 34,700 new jobs.
  • Florida job postings showed 235,950 openings in February 2017.
  • In February, Florida’s 24 regional workforce boards reported 29,574 Floridians, including 1,413 veterans, were placed in jobs.

Gov. Scott: Businesses Created Nearly 51,000 Jobs in January

Posted on March 13, 2017

More than 1.34 Million Jobs Created Since December 2010

Governor Rick Scott announced today that Florida businesses created 50,700 private-sector jobs in January, bringing the total number of new jobs added since December 2010 to 1,343,100. Governor Scott made the announcement at Herc Rentals Inc. which, thanks to the hard work of Enterprise Florida (EFI), is expanding its Lee County-based corporate headquarters, creating 122 new jobs.

Governor Scott said, “I am proud to announce that Florida’s private-sector businesses created nearly 51,000 new jobs in January. In the last six years, our state has added more than 1.34 million new jobs with help from our economic development organizations like Enterprise Florida that fight for new investment all across our state. Today’s announcement of Herc Rentals adding more than 120 new jobs would not have been possible without the hard work and collaboration of EFI. Unfortunately, politicians in the Florida House last week voted to kill our jobs program– threatening great jobs wins like Herc’s expansion in Bonita Springs. We will continue to fight for jobs and ensure Florida remains competitive for major jobs wins that provide opportunities for Florida families.”

For the 58th consecutive month, Florida’s annual job growth rate of 3.6 percent is exceeding the nation’s rate of 1.8 percent. In the last year alone, 260,600 new jobs were created by businesses across the state. Florida’s unemployment rate remained low at five percent in January.

Cissy Proctor, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, said, “After a very strong year of job creation in 2016, Florida businesses are doubling down on their investment in new jobs. In January, more than 50,000 new jobs empowered Florida families to achieve financial security. Florida must build on the momentum of the last six years by continuing to support economic diversification and job creation opportunities for all Floridians.”

Other positive economic indicators include:

  • Private-sector industries gaining the most jobs in January were:
    • Professional and business services with 11,800 new jobs;
    • Construction with 10,700 new jobs, and
    • Trade, transportation and utilities with 6,700 new jobs.
  • Florida job postings showed 255,690 openings in January 2017.
  • In January, Florida’s 24 regional workforce boards reported more than 31,898 Floridians, including 1,352 veterans, were placed in jobs.
  • Labor force increased by 251,000 over the year in January 2017, rising by 2.6 percent.
