The Villages Daily Sun: Boost in tourism is a gain for Villages

Posted on February 5, 2018

Another day, another dollar — or in Florida’s case, another $306 million.

That’s how much out-of-state visitors collectively spend in a single day when they vacation in the Sunshine State.

Just as more people are coming to Florida, tourists also are spending more money while they’re here, according to new research from Visit Florida, the state’s public-private tourism marketer.

That number grew to $112 billion in 2016, Visit Florida found. It’s an increase of $4 billion from the year before.

“It is great news that Florida has reached yet another tourism record with a historic $112 billion in visitor spending in 2016,” Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement. “Florida’s tourism industry helps support more than 1.4 million jobs across our state and is a major driver in our growing economy.”

2016 was also the year Florida attracted more than 100 million visitors for the first time.

Local tourism is booming, too. Tri-county leaders see lodging occupancy rates as a reflection of the growth in out-of-state visitors.

Occupancy in 2017 was 65.8 percent in Sumter, 70.8 percent in Marion and 71.4 percent in Lake, according to STR, a data and analytics specialist that tracks U.S. hotel data.

All three counties experienced greater occupancy compared to 2016 rates, STR stated.

The optimism comes as Sumter leaders continue promoting the county and The Villages as a destination.

A state built on tourism

Without tourism, Florida wouldn’t have more than $88 billion in gross domestic product, according to Visit Florida’s economic impact report.

That figure represents almost 10 percent of the state’s overall GDP.

Florida tourists spent most of their money on lodging at hotels and vacation rentals, an industry that brought about $32 billion in 2016, the report showed. That’s up more than 3 percent from 2015.

Tourists also offset the tax burden for Florida residents, contributing $11.6 billion in state and local tax revenues, the report showed.

Out-of-state visitation directly or indirectly supports more than 1.4 million Florida jobs, according to Visit Florida. The agency considers lodging, dining, entertainment and retail trade as tourism jobs.

Tourism represents more than 17 percent of total employment in Florida and every 78 visitors to the state support one tourism job, the report showed.

Scott credits the marketing efforts of Visit Florida with attracting record tourism and tourist spending.

Keeping that growth in mind, he said he hopes to work with the Florida Legislature to secure $100 million in taxpayer funding for Visit Florida in the 2018-19 fiscal year.

Department of Education Celebrates Career and Technical Education Month

Posted on February 5, 2018

This month, the Florida Department of Education, students and educators are celebrating Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month with the 2018 theme, “Celebrate Today and Own Tomorrow.”

“We are proud to offer Floridians a public education system that was designed to help students of all ages and backgrounds reach their academic and career goals,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “Many students have gained the professional skills necessary to succeed through the Career and Technical Education programs available in all of our state’s school districts and colleges. Career and Technical Education Month is a great time to highlight the tremendous opportunities available to help students get a head-start on their careers.”

More than half a million Florida students are enrolled in secondary and postsecondary career and technical education. Programs around the state will hold activities during February to promote awareness about these educational opportunities.

“CTE programs have evolved from the ‘vocational’ programs of the past that prepared students for a single job with limited skills to today’s programs where students are prepared for a career,” said Career and Adult Education Chancellor Rod Duckworth. “Students who are enrolled in Florida’s CTE courses and programs are developing the skills to be successful in today’s workplace and those necessary for the jobs of the future.”

In honor of CTE Month, the department recognized two students who are benefiting greatly from CTE programs.

Kaitlyn Bowman is a high school junior in the engineering magnet program at Lyman High School in Seminole County. She has been studying engineering since middle school and plans to continue after graduation. Through this program, Kaitlyn has taken coursework in engineering, digital electronics and robotics and participated in SkillsUSA, which enables CTE students to strengthen their leadership skills and compete in their chosen field. Following graduation, Kaitlyn will work toward a degree in mechanical engineering.

Nicolas Velasco graduated in 2017 from Atlantic Technical High School in Broward County, where he studied machining to build the foundation he will need to pursue a degree in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. He was selected for the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Vocational Scholarship Program, and he is currently representing Florida in Germany, where he has begun a series of CTE internships.

Students and educators continue to experience the positive impacts associated with Career and Technical Education and Industry Certifications, as evidenced by the data points below.

  • More than 420,000 K-12 students are enrolled in career and technical education programs in Florida’s public schools.
  • More than 52,000 students are enrolled in district technical center programs that prepare students for immediate entry into high demand, high skill employment opportunities.
  • More than 164,000 students are enrolled in the Florida College System postsecondary career and technical education programs.
  • The number of industry certifications earned by K-12 students continues to rise.  In 2015-16, high school students earned a total of 81,970 industry certifications, and in 2016-17, that number jumped to 102,044.
  • More than 489,000 students in grades 6-12 are enrolled in one of over 1,900 registered Career and Professional Education Academies and more than 17,000 registered Career-Themed Courses.

Gov. Scott Directs FDOT to Implement Evacuation and Fuel Capacity Improvements During Emergencies

Posted on February 2, 2018

Today, Governor Rick Scott directed the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to implement both immediate and long-term improvements to help Florida residents, businesses and visitors during emergencies. Following Hurricane Irma, Governor Scott directed FDOT to begin examining ways to help expedite evacuation routes from the I-75/ Florida Turnpike Interchange near Wildwood to the Florida-Georgia border, as well as ways to increase fuel capacity during state storm emergencies. The improvements FDOT is adopting are based on the findings of these reports.

Governor Scott said, “As Florida continues to recover from Hurricane Irma, the largest storm to impact our state in modern history, it is critically important that we continue to do all we can to make sure our state is fully prepared in the face of any potential disaster. Last fall, I directed FDOT to examine ways to improve evacuations and fuel capacity and following the completion of these reports, I have directed the agency to implement short and long-term improvements that will help protect our families and visitors. These improvements will ensure that Florida continues to be a national leader in emergency management and solely focused on keeping families safe.”

Short-term evacuation-related improvements to be implemented no later than June at the direction of Governor Scott include:

  • Expanding Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) along key interstate routes;
  • Beginning installation of cameras and dynamic message signs on I-75 from Ocala to the Georgia state line; and
  • Increasing the department’s Florida 511 website system to accommodate increased usage.

Long-term evacuation-related improvements to be implemented at the direction of Governor Scott include:

  • Completing the I-75/Turnpike interchange construction in 2019;
  • Beginning construction to widen Florida’s Turnpike to six lanes from the Lake/Sumter county line to the CR 468 interchange in 2023 and from the CR 468 interchange to I-75 in 2025; and
  • Studying the deployment of traffic management tools along the US 19/98/27 route for emergency evacuation.

Short-term fuel-related improvements to be implemented no later than July at the direction of Governor Scott include:

  • Working with the Division of Emergency Management (DEM) and law enforcement to identify critical gas stations along state evacuation routes and plan for more efficient fuel service during emergencies;
  • Assessing options for expanding fuel capacity at existing department owned facilities for first responders; and
  • Coordinating with neighboring states on a communications plan on the movement of oversize and overweight vehicles during emergencies.

Long-term fuel-related improvements to be implemented at the direction of Governor Scott include:

  • Assessing options for additional fuel storage and dispensing at fuel terminals in collaboration with Florida Ports and the fuel industry.
