Drivers traveling eastbound on State Road (S.R.) 44/New York Avenue in downtown DeLand can expect a weekend detour to accommodate concrete repair work at Amelia Avenue. S.R. 44 Detour at Woodland Boulevard in DeLand
Motorists are advised of planned detours along State Road (S.R.) 44 near Woodland Boulevard from about 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, through Sunday, June 10. Woodland Boulevard will remain open. Access to businesses and residences between Amelia Avenue and Woodland Boulevard, and between Clara Avenue and Woodland Boulevard will be maintained.
The closure is needed for concrete repairs on S.R. 44 on both sides of Woodland Boulevard. The work is weather permitting. During the closure, S.R. 44 traffic will be detoured around the work zone using Clara, Amelia, Rich and Howry avenues. Please see attached map.
The closures are part of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project to repair and replace sections of concrete roadway along S.R. 44 between Boundary and Hill avenues. An additional detour is expected near Alabama Avenue later in the month.
Electronic message boards will be used to alert motorists to lane closures and detours, and updates will be available on the FDOT’s Central Florida website, CFLRoads.com.

Gov. Scott Awards More Than 220 Veterans with Veterans Service Award at the National Guard Armory in Deland
Governor Rick Scott visited the National Guard Armory in Deland and awarded 224 veterans with his Governor’s Service Medal. Since 2013 Governor Scott has awarded more than 14,500 veterans with the Governor’s Veterans Service Medal.
The following Florida veterans were highlighted during today’s ceremony:
Staff Sergeant Ryan Bounds
Staff Sergeant Ryan Bounds enlisted in the Army at 17 years old, and has served for 14 years. He served in Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Among his many awards and achievements, he has received the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon.
Sergeant Christopher Creese
Sergeant Christopher Creese has served for 17 years, and deployed to Iraq in 2009. Among his many awards and commendations, he has received the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal.
Master Chief Charles Mayer
Master Chief Charles Mayer joined the Navy in 1959 during the Vietnam War. He continued to serve for 25 years before retiring in 1984. Among his many awards and commendations, he has received the Good Conduct Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Expedition Medal, the Armed Forces Expedition Medal and the Meritorious Unit Medal.
Lance Corporal Charles Williams
Lance Corporal Charles Williams joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965. He was deployed to Vietnam as a Rifleman and participated with his unit in 14 campaigns in support of efforts against the North Vietnamese Army. For their part in the war, his unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and Lance Corporal Williams received the Purple Heart for his injuries sustained in combat. Today, he focuses his talents on assisting veterans as the Commander of the Orange Baker Memorial American Legion Post 187 in DeLand.
S.R. 44 Weekend Detours at Clara Avenue, Florida Avenue in DeLand
Drivers on State Road (S.R.) 44 (New York Avenue) in DeLand are advised of upcoming scheduled weekend detours at the intersections with Clara Avenue and Florida Avenue just west of U.S. 17/92 (Woodland Boulevard). The closures are weather permitting and are needed to accommodate concrete road repairs.
From about 9 a.m. Friday, May 11, to approximately 6 a.m. Monday, May 14, the contractor plans to close the S.R. 44 at Clara Avenue intersection. Work also will be occurring in two locations on S.R. 44 between Clara Avenue and Florida Avenue. Access to local businesses will be maintained.
The posted detour routes will utilize Florida Avenue, Rich Avenue, Howry Avenue and Stone Street. (Please see attached map).
The contractor is expected to close the intersection of S.R. 44 and Florida Avenue the following weekend from about 9 a.m. Friday, May 18, to about 6 a.m. Monday, May 21. During the closure, traffic will be directed around the work area using Amelia Avenue, Rich Avenue, Howry Avenue and Clara Avenue.
The closures are part of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project to repair and replace sections of concrete roadway along S.R. 44 between Boundary Avenue and Hill Avenue.

Stetson University to Celebrate 132nd Commencement Next Week
828 students will receive degrees, third-highest total of honorees
Stetson University will celebrate its 132nd commencement in DeLand next week, honoring 828 graduate and undergraduate students. That number represents the third-highest total number of graduating students Stetson has honored at commencement. Again this year, the graduate and undergraduate ceremonies will be divided.
Stetson will confer master’s degrees on 180 graduate students from the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Business Administration on Thursday, May 10, in the Edmunds Center, 5-6 p.m., with a reception for students, family and friends in the Edmunds Center immediately following the ceremony. Doors open for guests at 3:45 p.m. The Edmunds Center is at 143 E. Pennsylvania Ave., DeLand, Florida, 32723.
Stetson will honor 648 undergraduate students at their commencement on Saturday, May 12, 8-10 a.m., in Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. Doors open for guests at 6:45 a.m. Receptions for students, family and friends will be held on the DeLand campus immediately following the ceremony. On the DeLand campus, students and faculty nominate and vote on the keynote speakers. This year the graduate ceremony keynoters are Rachel Faircloth, business, and Lucianna Chixaro Ramos, creative writing. The undergraduate speakers are Kaitlyn Orien Silva Forsythe, digital arts, and Lucas Ludwig Coura, voice.
In addition to the two commencement ceremonies, Stetson celebrates student achievement with the ROTC Commissioning Ceremony and Undergraduate Awards & Recognition. Both events will be on Friday, May 11, in Lee Chapel in Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, Florida, 32723. ROTC’s commissioning will be 10-11 a.m. and the awards event is 3-5 p.m.

State Road 44 Detour at Clara Avenue in DeLand
Drivers on State Road (S.R.) 44/New York Avenue in DeLand can expect detours this weekend at the intersection with Clara Avenue west of Woodland Boulevard. The detour will begin around 9 a.m. Friday, April 20, and last through approximately 6 a.m. Monday, April 23. The closure is needed to accommodate concrete slab replacement within the intersection.
During the detour, the routes will be as follows:
- S.R. 44 traffic heading west will turn right on Florida Avenue, left on Rich Avenue and left on Stone Street.
- S.R. 44 traffic heading east will turn right on Stone Street, left on Howry Avenue and left on Florida Avenue.
- U.S. 17/92 traffic traveling north to westbound S.R. 44 will turn left on Howry Avenue, then right on Stone Street.
- U.S. 17/92 traffic traveling south to westbound S.R. 44 will turn right on Wisconsin Avenue, left on Florida Avenue, right on Rich Avenue and left on Stone Street.
The detours are part of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project to repair and replace areas of concrete along S.R. 44 between Boundary Avenue and Hill Avenue.
