United Technologies will add another 100 jobs in Palm Beach Gardens by 2021, an executive announced at the opening for the company’s $115 million technology showcase off Donald Ross Road.

Gov. Rick Scott spoke at the opening for the 224,000 square-foot Center for Intelligent Buildings as hundreds of employees watched the event from balconies overlooking the lobby.

“To have this happen in this short period of time is remarkable,” Scott said. “These are good, high-paying jobs for a company that’s going to continue to be successful.”

UTC created 380 new jobs in Palm Beach County and kept 70 local jobs. The 100 employees to be hired in the next three years also will work at the building. Employees have been moving into the new offices since March.

“Gov. Scott talks about jobs — a lot. The important thing I can tell you is it’s not just talks. Companies like ours don’t take a decision to relocate our corporate headquarters lightly,” he said.

The creation of additional jobs will have a bigger economic impact than Palm Beach Gardens expected, Mayor Maria Marino said.

Voters and candidates from across the Sunshine State gathered in Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon for a straw poll held by WBOB.

Several statewide candidates, including … state Rep. Matt Caldwell, who is running in the Republican primary to be agriculture commissioner, spoke before the straw poll.

Supporters for other candidates, including … state Sen. Denise Grimsley and former state Rep. Baxter Troutman, who are both running in the Republican primary to be Florida’s next agricultural commissioner, were also out in full force.

Caldwell easily won the GOP agriculture commissioner straw poll with 81 votes followed by Grimsley with 33 votes and Troutman with 21 votes.

The Duval County Supervisor of Elections team, which included former state Rep. Dick Kravitz, managed the straw poll.

Gov. Rick Scott is asking U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to move quickly to get disaster-relief funding into the hands of Florida citrus growers, as it may be another three months before farmers can start to apply for the money.

“Many growers, both large and small, in Florida are awaiting details on the USDA’s (U.S. Department of Agriculture’s) plan to distribute funding,” Scott wrote.

On Friday, Perdue announced that a program to distribute $2.36 billion to farmers in Florida and other areas would be running by July 16.

…

Florida’s agriculture industry suffered an estimated $2.5 billion in losses from Irma, with the citrus industry accounting for at least $761 million of those damages.
